Progression
I was paired with Carnie for this project, this is what we came up with for our International Graphic project, from our research, to our Japanese trips, to our data collection, idea concepts and even our final artwork, here is the progression, from our beginning ideas and research, up to our final execution.
Final
Behind Destine Dotonbori
There is a lot of things that we can learn from a nation’s culture, especially in a very cultured filled country like Japan. During our research process, the thought of being able to learn about a culture by observing, experiencing and understanding it, and taking the inspirations and positive lessons from that particular culture, not only excites us but also being able to add a unique twist to it, interest us. Knowing this, our team developed an interest towards learning about the Japanese culture, taking the culture’s best and producing a design work that not only represents the assimilation of the Japanese culture, but also putting our own personal touches to the design outcome. After learning about the culture, and by combining the things that we learned from the Japanese culture, and our own personal design inputs, develops a unique blend of that assimilation. Because of this, we would like so let others see the Japanese culture through our eyes as young up and coming designers, through our final design outcome, and show how amazing culture of Japan through us. Therefore, the final outcome we are doing a Japanese style Journal book which shows helpful guide to some of the most common Japanese food terms found on restaurant menus, so you know what to expect next time you order! Also including the history, food phrases, what the best to eat with, how to eat and etc. We also designed a blank space for the readers to noted down their experience and also postcards for them to share with their loves one.
Why is it called Destine Dotonbori ?
Destine Dotonbori is a tribute book, about assimilating in the Japanese culture trough food. Why food? Believe it or not, it is one of the best ways to enjoy a journey, not only by seeing it as fuel, but also as one of the ways to express a culture, beyond what we see, but what we feel. Enjoy, learn and share a way to assimilate into a culture through this book.
Who is Kaito ?
In the Japanese culture, octopuses are considered a by product, and that the Japanese didn't want to waste anything, so they still ate it as a way of their appreciation towards the food that has been provided for them, hence that why we used the octopus for as a character for this book, and that we wanted to pay an homage to that appreciation, and by making this book from the memories and lessons that we learned in Japan, also making room for others to save an appreciate their own memories.
