The Brief
The Book. (Part 3: Digital Book)

Duration of Assignment
3 Weeks (Briefing on Week 9)

Deadline
Week 12 (12 Jun 2016)

Description
In this final project 3 you will be required to adapt the printed book you have designed for the purpose of on-screen reading. The design of the digital Book will be dependant on the device it will be read from or the type of format used; ePub/PDF/HTML. Presently most digital books are in the ePub/eBook format (How To Create a Fixed Layout Ebook with Adobe InDesign CC), which is adaptable across devices. However this format is only available in Adobe CC. We shall strive to explore and decide on an appropriate format. Your input here is vital.
One very important area to focus on is navigation between pages; this has to be well thought through, as the user interface must not be an obstacle to seamless reading.
Note: Project 3 is an attempt to work on methods that are developing as we speak, so as your lecturer I too am learning these new features, with project 03 our classroom will effectively be a laboratory. Even so we shall strive to produce work that is of good standard.

Requirements
The student will adapt the designs from the printed format without loosing the identity and style of the said in the digital book. The final work will be uploaded unto the respective eportfolios and printed out in thumbnail formats for the hardcopy portfolio. The softcopy (printed book and digital book) will also be burnt on a CD. ‘Packaged’ your InDesign files to ensure all elements of your book has been collated when burning it on the CD.

Submission
  1. All gathered information (failures, successes, epiphanies, sketches, visual research, printouts, websites, images, charts, etc.) documented logically and chronologically in the A4 Clear Sheet folder. The works must be labelled and dated.
  2. All gathered information (failures, successes, epiphanies, sketches, visual research, printouts, websites, images, charts, etc.) documented logically and chronologically in the eportfolio for the duration of the project in one post and for the duration of the course in a separate post as instructed in class.
  3. Softcopy of the digital book uploaded unto the eportfolio for the purpose of reading. A thumbnail printout of the digital book.
  4. All files packaged and uploaded unto Google Drive and link provided in the eportfolio. Ensure all folders are labelled or named appropriately.
Objectives
  1. To develop students ability to adapt the various elements attractively in a digital book.
  2. To develop students ability create seamless navigation from page to page.
  3. To develop students ability to maintain a consistent identity with acceptable variation.

Part 1 of the book, the gifs are representing the things that happened in the past, like not having a place, also being under the limelight not knowing what to do and then having a broken stage in life. This is resembling the parts in Chapter 1.

Feedback

(Week 10)
Specific feedback
e-book : work on the spacing, leading and placement of the text and subtext, since the e-book is not printed, work on the animations and transitions of the layout for the e-book. And also pay attention to the word and letter spacing, for each layout, also for the pull quotes.

General feedback
After you all are done with the chapter 1 part of the e-book, continue on with the next chapters, make
sure that you finish all the chapters, the animation of the gifs and also the layouts of the rest of the
book, also have a variety in the layout, play with it but make sure it starts from the same hangline.

(Week 11)
Specific feedback
e-book : there is a good sense of journey in the layout, get started on the first page to the end of first chapter of your iphone and ipad version, also pay attention to the font sizes, because there is a difference between the seeing it on screen and seeing it on the iphone, also there is a different layout between the iphone and on desktop.

General feedback
After you seeing all of the works, i feel that there is a similarity amongs all of you, seeing all of you, i feel that i have push you guys towards following the grid system, and not giving you all enough freedom, to play around - Mr.Vinod. continue on with the other books, and remember only until the end of the first chapter.

(Week 12)
Specific feedback
e-book : everything seems to be working fine, the page numbers are wrong, remember to put in the page numbers based on the pages of each e-book. And then pay attention to the letter spacing, and the sizing of the icons on the top corner of the page, also make sure that you integrate the gifs, well with the layout on the iphone and the ipad

General feedback
Get it done by this friday, all the e-books, also don't forget to post it up on the blog, in thumbnails form and also print it out for the portfolio, and the progressions, every proggresion don't forget to put it into the blog too. Have the blog and the portfolio done by monday.

Reflections

(Week 10)
Experience
These past last view weeks has been really chill actually, meaning to say since we are wrapping up the semester it is a bit more relaxing and i'm feeling not as pressured to do work, it actually feels really nice to come in to class and be able to actually enjoy doing work, i actually feel relief that most of the hardship is done.

Observation
I observed that i was actually for the majority of the time just trying to get things and projects done, so i could just be done with it, i started to become more lazy and just wing is basically on the layouts.

Findings
I found that some of my friends are also experiencing the same things, we work faster, also before these past few weeks, we would always have extra classes on fridays, but since the last project most of us haven't been coming in to friday classes, we just work a lot faster and learn a lot from each other animation findings.

(Week 11)
Experience
This week was basically just finalising, the e-books are all basically almost done, its just a matter of finishing up the last few bits of the book, also it was pretty tiring, having to work on this project for the past few months has been exhausting, it is really a very long process.

Observation
I observed that i really couldn't stand doing this book anymore, because it was just a drag now, because the majority of the things are basically done, and i still hated my visuals all the way.

Findings
I found out that there my other friends are also basically winging it, they are also to the stage of being tired and being frustrated with the work, and just want to get it over with.

(Week 12)
Experience
It was the final week, so basically we just submitted our final works, and then hand it over to Mr.Vinod. And that is basically the end of the semester.

Observation
I observed that this semester i got to learn about time management and how to organise stuff better, i also learn about how to match lay outing and grid systems

Findings
I found that all of my friends are mostly having the same problems too, of either having weak layout but good visuals, or good layout but week visuals, but its all okay, because we made it in the end, we did it guys yes we did it !
